Job description  

 

The Schola Chiropractica Barcelona (SCB) will open its doors in October 2009 in Barcelona for the education and training of chiropractors. The college will provide a supportive and challenging learning environment for an international student community (programme delivered first two years in Spanish and English, and the remaining three years in English).  The SCB has strong links with the chiropractic community in Spain , Europe and overseas and will apply to the European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE) for accreditation.  It has established strong academic links with local universities and will rely on a number of both local and international teachers to deliver a five-year programme of study.  The programme is divided into an undergraduate cycle (3 years) and a postgraduate cycle (2 years), the latter will be delivered in collaboration with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, one of the top universities in Spain .  The college aims to become an educational leader in the provision of chiropractic education in the world and to play a key role in the recognition and regulation of chiropractic in Spain where, at present, there is only one other chiropractic college (located in Madrid ).

 

Job title: Module Teacher

Reports to: the Head of Department 

Salary: will be negotiated based upon experience and strength of candidate  

Appointment starts: 1st September 2009

 

Involvement required:

 Although teaching will not start until the 5th of October 2009, module teachers will be expected to officially start working at the SCB on the 1st of September 2009 on the preparation of the teaching and assessment of their module. As well as this, at that time, they will be expected to attend an Exam Setting Committee and Academic Board meeting. It is also essential that module teachers can devote approximately 6 hours during February 2009 on the revision of the already existing module descriptor and attend a 10-hour staff-development session which will take place during spring 2009.

 

Teaching calendar:

All teaching takes place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Semester One: Classes start on the 5th October 2009 and end on 22nd January 2010 (13 teaching weeks).

Semester Two: Classes start on the 22nd February 2010 and end on 28th May 2010 (13 teaching weeks).

 

Please note that modules may be either one semester long (semester I or semester II) or one year long (semesters I and II).

 

Main responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for the delivery (theory and practice) and assessment of the module.
  • Produces draft coursework and examinations in consultation with the ExternalExaminers and the Head of Department and marks assessment.
  • Makes use of the Virtual Learning Environment of the SCB for the preparation, delivery and assessment of the module (training will be provided).
  • Attends committees as required particularly Exam Committees and Academic Boards.  Attends staff-development sessions.
  • Provides administrative staff with information on the module timetable.
  • Is available to see students during allocated weekly office hours and responds to students' queries using the Virtual Learning Environment.

 

Minimum requirements:

  •  Educated at degree level in a relevant field of study. 
  • Has previous experience teaching at undergraduate level (candidates with no previous teaching experience might be considered based on the strength of candidate). 
  • Is proficient in either Spanish or English and has working knowledge of the other language (students can use either language to complete assessment and the module teacher will be expected to mark all assessments.  Support will be available and double marking will ensure consistency). 
 

 

The ideal candidate: 

  • Has good communication skills and an interest in education.  
  • Has knowledge of the state-of-the-art.  
  • Has an interest in chiropractic.   

 

This position can be upgraded to that of Module Leader based on merit.
