Job title: Principal

 

 

The Schola Chiropractica Barcelona (SCB) will open its doors in October 2009 in Barcelona for the education and training of chiropractors.  The college will provide a supportive and challenging learning environment for an international student community (programme delivered first two years in Spanish and English, and the remaining three years in English).  The SCB has strong links with the chiropractic community in Spain, Europe and overseas and will apply to the European Council on Chiropractic Education (ECCE) for accreditation.  It has established strong academic links with local universities and will rely on a number of both local and international teachers to deliver a five-year programme of studies.  The programme is divided into an undergraduate cycle (3 years) and a postgraduate cycle (2 years), the latter will be delivered in collaboration with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, one of the top universities in Spain. The college aims to become an educational leader in the provision of chiropractic education in the world and to play a key role in the recognition and regulation of chiropractic in Spain where, at present, there is only one other chiropractic college (located in Madrid).

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Principal of the SCB will play a key role in:

  • Strengthening the Community

 

This full-time post will effectively start in September 2009 although it is desirable that the person appointed becomes involved with some aspects of the development of the college from January 2009 (in collaboration with educational consultants and academic staff) in order to better undertake his/her duties at the commencement of the appointment (level of commitment from January 2009 to September 2009 to be agreed).

 

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a similar position, have knowledge and understanding of health science education (preferably chiropractic), have excellent communication and leadership skills and be fluent in both Spanish and English.  Salary will be negotiated based upon experience and strength of candidate.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Shaping the future of the college


The Principal will work with the Board of Directors and others to create a shared vision and strategic plan which inspires and motivates students, staff and all other members of the college community.

 

Managing the organisation


The Principal will provide effective management of the college and seek continuously to improve organisational structures based on self-evaluation.

 

Leading Learning and Teaching


The Principal has a central responsibility for raising the quality of the teaching and learning.  This involves high expectations, maintaining and evaluating outcomes and establishing a successful learning culture which all impact on students' achievement.  The Principal must also ensure that the academic curriculum enables students to achieve the competencies required of a chiropractic graduate as defined by the European Council for Chiropractic Education.

 

Developing a Research Ethos within the college

 

The Principal must ensure that the college provides a challenging environment in which to learn where attitudes of critical appraisal are engendered and contribute to the generation of new knowledge and that research is actively pursued by facilitating the relationship between teaching and research.

 

Managing Human Resources


Effective communication and relationships are key to effective headship.  The Principal needs to build a professional learning community which enables others to achieve.

 

Securing Accountability


With values at the heart of leadership, the Principal has a responsibility to the whole college community and is accountable to a range of groups particularly students.

 

Strengthening the Community

 

The Principal should engage with other higher education institutions, the European Council for Chiropractic Education, the chiropractic community in Spain (Asociación Española Quiropráctica) and governmental institutions in Cataluña and Spain to collaborate strategically and operationally to bring positive benefits.
